OSRS – Regicide Quest Completed!

Contains spoilers for the Regicide quest in Old School Runescape.

I took a little bit of a break from my Old School Runescape Ironman the last month or so. I was plodding my way through the Regicide quest when I got to a part where I needed to distill coal tar at the chemist in Rimmington to make a barrell bomb. I’ve been questing without guides as much as possible and I could not figure out what I was suppose to do to get the distiller to work. Rather than look it up, I put OSRS on hold for a while.

When I came back to it a few days ago, I gave in and used the Quest Helper in Runelite to figure out the distiller and then complete the rest of the quest. Turns out, I was almost done with it anyways, and I only had a few steps left. Though those steps included traversing the Underground Pass again, which feels like it takes forever and it’s unskippable.

The first time through, I brought all the items I needed to get through the Underground Pass and, thankfully, remembered the route to get over the spike pit without falling in. I brought some food, but not much because I didn’t anticipate any combat, just healing as needed from a few traps that had a chance to do damage. I got to the end unscathed and just needed to jump over a leaf pile to make my way to the Tyras Camp to presumably blow it up with my barrel bomb.

I failed that jump over the leaf pile 4 times.

With 57 health, and 15 damage per failure, I used up all of the food I brought pretty quickly. My Agility level is 73 so I thought I just had a bit of bad luck. Surely, the next jump would make it.

Nope.

I tried again and failed.

Tried again and failed.

Once more should do it.

Nope. Failed.

I was running on fumes for health. I had to use the regeneration prayer and sit around for 15 minutes just to get my health high enough to attempt the jump again, which I once again failed.

Frustrated, I took to the internet to see what I was doing wrong here. Obviously, it must be something because there’s no way I should fail that many times with my Agility. Turns out, I was clicking the wrong tile the whole time. I was clicking the middle of the leaf pile to jump, but the game treats the adjacent tiles around the leaf pile as part of the trap. So I was running over the trap and falling in before taking my jump action.

Very carefully, I clicked the tile closest to me and

Success!

I was over the pile! I successfully passed the next trap! Then I jumped over a trip wire and…

GOT POISONED!!!!!

With no food and absolutely no antipoison, I died.

Now death at my level doesn’t mean much other than wasted time and a free teleport back to Lumbridge. I picked up all of my stuff at Death’s Office and made a quick stop at the bank in Lumbridge Castle to grab another rope to traverse the Underground Pass, an antipoison (wasn’t falling for that again), and filled the rest of my inventory up with food. You know, just in case.

Again, I trekked through the Underground Pass, jumped over the dreaded leaf pile on the first try, got through the next trap, jumped the tripwire and got poisoned again. I drank my antiposion with a smug grin, gave the guard by the catapult the cooked rabbit he had been dreaming about so he would leave me alone with said catapult. I walked over there, ready to place my barrel bomb on the catapult and…

I couldn’t light it because I forgot to bring a tinderbox.

At this point, the last few steps of the quest, which should have taken maybe a half hour had now gone on for an hour and a half. I was frustrated but, I knew if I stopped now, I’d probably be in for another break from the game.

So, I took another trip back to a bank. I double checked I had everything I needed this time. Tinderbox, check! Rope, check! Antipoison, check! Food, check! Another cooked rabbit, check! The barrel bomb, check!

Everything in hand, I begrudgingly made my way (for the third time!) through the Underground Pass, over the leaf pile, through the next trap, over the tripwire (drank my antipoison), gave the rabbit to the guard, placed the barrel bomb on the catapult (and lit it) and watched the Tyras Camp burn!!!!!!!

All this only to get back to the Castle in East Ardougne and learn that I was working for the bad guys, who want to bring back the Dark Lord, the whole time.

Oh well, at least I got a nice chuck of Agility xp and 15k coins.

Good job making it through that “short” little bit of quest.

I am amazed at how much patience we must have once had to play through this kind of thing. Actually, I gave up on a lot of games (never played Runescape) without finishing, so I guess I *didn’t* have that much patience.
